It could have been a disaster.

After a wonderful senior season in her first year at Jones County, Victoria Dumas ran perhaps her worst race of the year in the 100-meter hurdles preliminaries at the GHSA state track meet in Albany last Friday, finishing last and failing to advance to Saturday’s finals.

“She got off to a bad start, had a little misstep and couldn’t recover,” coach Geoff Moore said. “She didn’t hit any hurdles or fall or anything, but that just got her off her rhythm at the start, and she couldn’t get back going right. The 100 is so quick that any mistake is hard to overcome.”

Moore said Dumas was extremely upset after her bad race.

But she recovered.

About an hour later she won her heat in the 300 hurdles, running a strong 44.51 seconds, and on Saturday Dumas made that time stand up with a 44.59 to finish second in the state finals.
