Moving from Virginia to Gray for her final year of high school put a damper on Victoria Dumas’ hopes of earning a college scholarship in track.

“It took a while for the coaches from schools around here to learn who she was and what she could do,” Jones County coach Geoff Moore said.

Strong performances in the 100- and 300-meter hurdles, her best events, throughout this past spring season for the Lady Hounds earned her some looks from the recruiters, and a berth in the state track meet in Albany in early May.

But her worst race of the year in the 100 hurdles preliminaries at state left her thinking she had blown her chance of a scholarship, even when she recovered to finish second in the Class AAAAA 300 hurdles finals.

Turns out, it only delayed an offer to run track in college.

Dumas said Monday she has been offered a scholarship at Jacksonville State University in Jacksonville, Ala., and is waiting for the forms to sign and return to make it all official.
