The Jones County Board of Education announced the dates for two important events on the horizon at its recent monthly meeting.

In his superintendent’s report, William Mathews stated that this year’s Homecoming Parade would be held on Wednesday, Oct. 9, beginning at 4:30 p.m. The parade was moved from its customary Thursday slot due to students not having school that day.

The homecoming game is Oct. 11 against Evans High School. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.

Mathews also announced the Teacher of the Year selection event will take place Nov. 7 at Wells Elementary School.

Candidates for Jones County’s Teacher of the Year are Melissa Middlebrooks, Dames Ferry Elementary; Erin Yawn, Gray Elementary; Lauren Sheffield, Turner Woods Elementary; Janet Schraufnagel, Wells Elementary; Michael Hataway, Clifton Ridge Middle School; Melinda Kitchens, Gray Station Middle School; Traci Woods, JCHS Ninth Grade Campus; and Angela Jones, Jones County High School.

Sherry Sanders spoke to the board members about Title I schools. She said the school system started looking at gaps in student test scores in 2006. She said they identified students who were struggling and tried to find out what they needed to improve.

“We began a program of inclusion, and it became a mission of teachers,” she said.
