Social media is second nature to many young people, and its casual use is occasionally useful for law enforcement.

Brent Michael Thompson, of Haddock, was sentenced to 12 months probation in Jones County Superior Court, Sept. 19, for charges he received eluding Gray Police Officer Jacob Hunnicutt June 27. He has been at the Jones County Law Enforcement Center since his arrest.

According to the report of his arrest, it was his comments on Facebook that led to his identification and subsequent arrest.

Hunnicutt’s report states that, while he was patrolling the area of West Clinton Street June 26, he observed an older model Honda traveling at a high rate of speed. He estimated the car was going 60 mph in a 45 mph zone.

The officer turned around in an attempt to stop the vehicle and got close enough to recognize the driver from a previous traffic stop, but he could not recall his name.

Hunnicutt activated his blue lights, and the Honda accelerated and cut through a private driveway. The officer lost sight of it. He and other officers checked the area for about 30 minutes without success.
