They play an elimination game against Greenbrier at 4 p.m. Thursday, with the winner of that game facing Houston County at 6 p.m. The third game, if needed, will follow at 8 p.m.
Jones County opened the double-elimination final four tournament with a 5-0 win over Evans on Wednesday afternoon. Houston County downed Greenbrier 12-5 in the second game. Greenbrier then downed Evans 12-4 in an elimination game before Jones County and Houston County met in a winners' bracket game to finish the first day of the tourney.
The Lady Hounds had beaten Houston County twice during the regular season, both one-run victories. But the Lady Bears turned the tables on Jones County Wednesday night, breaking through for two runs in the fifth and adding one more in the seventh.
Junior lefty Kylie Bass, who had struck out nine and allowed only one hit in the shutout victory over Evans in the afternoon game, was not as sharp against the Lady Bears Wednesday night. She surrendered six hits and hit three batters in the loss, and the Jones County defense also made two errors. Bass struck out only two.
The Lady Bears had runners in scoring position twice before finally breaking through with two runs on a two-out single by Hayley Tirece in the top of the fifth. They had loaded the bases with a single and two hit batters.
In the seventh, Houston took advantage of another hit batter and an error to score its final run.
The Lady Hounds also had several chances to score but could never come up with the key hit needed. They had runners in scoring position in four innings, including runners on second and third twice, but Houston pitcher Amber Coy was able to escape each time. She also allowed six hits, walked one and struck out one.
