The Jones County girls advance to the state playoffs as a second seed and will host a first-round best-of-three series next Wednesday and Thursday against the third seed from Region 4-AAAAA, likely either Union Grove or Ola. Game times will be announced later.
The Lady Hounds earned the right to host in the opening round of state and play Houston for the region title by defeating Greenbrier 3-0 in an elimination game Thursday afternoon.
Olivia Lane had two doubles and drove in two runs to lead the Jones County offense against Greenbrier, and Kylie Bass held the Wolfpack to five hits and struck out eight in the shutout.
That victory put the Lady Hounds in the championship bracket, but they would have had to beat Houston twice to win the crown.
It appeared they might force a third game when they broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth. Bass reached on an error, and after a one-out single by McKenzie Barnes, a sacrifice fly to center scored the game's first run.
The Lady Bears tied the game in the top of the sixth on an error, a sacrifice bunt and an RBI single by Haley Tierce.
Neither team was able to score in the seventh inning or the first extra inning in the eighth. But Houston scored two runs on a pair of singles and a double by Kelly Warner in the top of the ninth to take the lead. Jones County was unable to answer in the bottom of the inning, allowing Houston to leave with the championship trophy.
