A letter dated Oct. 10 from Chief Investigator Chris Harvey of the office of the secretary of state stated that he personally received a check from Gray Mayor Pro Tem Loretta Lipsey Sept. 4 for $350. That amount is the full payment of Lipsey’s fine for violations that occurred in the 2009 Gray election and subsequent runoff.
A spreadsheet received from the office Oct. 4, however, did not reflect the payment. As a result of that information, it was stated in a News editorial that Lipsey had not paid her fine.
Harvey stated in his letter that the check was processed, but the fine was accidently entered twice.
“While the payment was received, our records erroneously showed an outstanding fine of $350,” he said.
The investigator said it was simply an error and apologized that it happened. The News would like to add its regrets for the incorrect statement in the Oct. 9 editorial that Lipsey had not paid her fine.
The mayor pro tem was fined the $350 following an investigation of violations that occurred during the 2009 Gray election. She was charged with and admitted to the offense of having absentee ballots in her possession.
