A one-car accident took the life of a Jones County middle school student Sunday afternoon.

Jones County fatality investigator Kenny Allen said the accident took place at 4:04 p.m., Oct. 20, in the 1800 block of Highway 11.

Eleven-year-old Alana Land, who was a sixth-grader at Gray Station Middle School, was a passenger in a pickup truck driven by her grandfather, Terrell Land, who is 62.

Allen said it is unknown at this time what caused the car to leave the roadway and strike the culvert of a driveway. The truck was traveling east toward Gray and struck the culvert on the passenger side.

The investigator said the youngster was in the back seat of the vehicle and was wearing her seat belt. The driver was not wearing a seat belt.

Allen said, when he arrived at the scene, both victims had already been transported to the Medical Center of Central Georgia, and Alana had been pronounced deceased.
