Grant writer and administrator Linda Carol, with Government Consulting, recently returned to speak to Jones County commissioners as requested.

Carol came back to discuss the possibility of the county applying for a 2014 Community Development Block Grant for housing that could be joined with a sewer project. She was at the board’s Oct. 8 meeting and spoke about a multiactivity CDBG.

Commissioner Jonathan Pitts expressed his interest in the idea and asked her to come back for a work session to explain the possibilities in more detail. Carol is currently administrating a housing CDBG in Gray and has been authorized by the city council to apply for another grant to continue to improve housing conditions in the same area.

Pitts stated that housing is an issue in District 2. He said his district has vacant homes and some that need to be torn down. He would like to revitalize the community along with the establishment of a community center.

The commissioner said Haddock is a food desert because not many healthy food choice opportunities are available for Haddock residents who do not have transportation to Gray or Macon. As a result they end up spending a lot of money at corner convenience stores.
