The Jones County boys and girls have both qualified for the state championships in cross country for the first time since 2007, coach Mike Denaro said, after the girls finished third and the boys fourth in the Region 2-AAAAA meet that the Greyhounds hosted last Saturday at Gray Station Middle School.

Kate Boland, who was sixth, and Tia Mallory, who was ninth, both finished in the top 10 for the Lady Hounds, and Ethan Oulsnam placed seventh to pace the Jones County boys.

The state championships will be Saturday in Carrollton.

Lakeside-Evans won the girls’ region title, with five runners placing in the top 10, including the top three finishers – Alyssa Hooker, Lara Way and Jasmine Payne. Hooker’s winning time in the 5K race was 10:30.47.

Greenbrier was second in the team standings, followed by Jones County, Evans, Northside-Warner Robins, Houston County, Grovetown and Warner Robins. The top four schools qualified for state.

Kate Boland ran a 21:40.03 for the Lady Hounds, and Mallory had a 22:18. Rounding out the top five for the Jones County girls were Kaitlyn Holder, 12th at 22:29.09; Maria Boland, 18th at 23:11.81; and Frannie Pittman, 27th at 24:08.97.
