The first of the top tier defendants in Jones County’s most recent Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) case was denied bond in Superior Court last week.

Michelle Denise Beckum, 46, of Spalding County, was arrested Oct. 22 as part of a sweep of individuals involved in a drug ring that spanned 12 counties, ranging from Middle Georgia to the metro Atlanta area.

She was in Superior Court Nov. 14 requesting bond. Sheriff Butch Reece recently stated that 50 people were arrested in the sweep.

Thirty-five of those defendants were granted bond Oct. 31 in amounts ranging from $25,000 to $150,000, depending on their level of involvement in the case and their criminal histories.

Beckum was not one of them.

Assistant District Attorney Dawn Baskin styled the case for the court and explained that the RICO case has not been indicted by the grand jury.
