Several Jones County residents are members of a new bicycle racing team that was introduced last week in Macon.

The Cherry Street Cycles Reparto Corse, which is Italian for racing division, team will begin racing in events throughout the Southeast in the spring, team member Chad Madan said.

“We train and ride all year long, but most of the races are held from early spring through mid-fall, so that’s sort of our season,” he said.

The team was announced at a photo session at the Cherry Street Cycles bicycle shop at 420 Cotton Ave. in Macon last Tuesday, with Macon Mayor Robert Reichert on hand.

Cherry Street Cycles owner Damon Allen said the new team shakes up the Middle Georgia racing community, with many of the members coming from several other area teams.

“It is amateur racing, but the riders are still under contract to their teams,” he said. “Several of our riders’ contracts were ending with the teams they were riding for, so it will be a surprise to many in the racing community that they will be joining a new team.”
