Commissioners work to plug water, sewer losses

Water rates and supplemental health insurance were the main topics of discussion at last week’s County Commission meeting.

The commissioners’ Dec. 3 meeting was preceded by a work session about the county’s water and sewer rates. Water Superintendent Freddie Wiggins and engineer Tim Ingram spoke about the reason for the proposed rate increases. The bottom line of the presentation was that the county has been losing money by charging its customers less than the water system is paying Macon Water Authority to process its wastewater. Another reason for the rate hike is that MWA rates are going up in January.

Ingram gave commissioners three rate options, and the highest of the options allowed the county to break even. Adoption of that rate would increase the average sewer bill by $6 a month.

Commissioner Tommy Robinson asked why the county would want to just break even?

“Money in, money out. We’ve been struggling for years,” he said.

Commissioner Jonathan Pitts responded.

“In the past we’ve been losing money. We are trying to break even so we don’t hurt people,” he said.

Robinson said the problem is that the increases have been put off and now it is time to pay the piper.
