A live Christmas wreath was recently placed on every grave in the Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery to honor veterans’ service to their country.
The Wreaths Across America ceremony at the Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery took place at noon Dec. 14 to coincide with ceremonies across the nation. More than 200 people attended the event, with many of them standing in the rain during the ceremony to assist with the laying of the wreaths.
David Blanton is the GVMC liaison with the national Wreaths Across America annual tribute and was more than pleased that all 1,640 graves were covered this year, which is the first time since the Milledgeville effort began seven years ago.
Blanton is also the Georgia Ride captain for the Patriot Guard Riders that escorts funeral processions for veterans. He is optimistic that once all the graves have been covered this year, the donations will continue in the future.
He has agreed to head up the wreath donation effort again next year.
