Family members of an elderly Jones County woman who appeared to be the victim of a man who took advantage of her kindness had their day in court last week.

David John Stanley was sentenced to 10 years in Jones County Superior Court Dec. 19 for the offense of burglary in the first degree. The first 132 days will be served in confinement with credit for time served from Aug. 9. The remainder of his sentence may be served on probation.

The victim’s daughter stood in court behind the prosecutor and spoke on behalf of her mother, who is now in a nursing home.

“My mother is a loving person, and the defendant was the beneficiary of her kindness,” she said.

The daughter said that is the type of person her mother is. She said her mother gave the defendant a home, fed him, and helped him when he needed money.

“He repaid my mother by stealing her prized possessions. They may not have been worth a lot of money, but they meant a lot to her,” she said, and then she spoke directly to Stanley.
