The November election for the city resulted in two changes in the makeup the two top positions of Gray’s governing body. Mayor Stphen Tingen and Mayor Pro Tem Ed Barbee will take their seats at the Jan. 6 council meeting. The city’s elected officials actually took their oaths of office prior to the Dec. 2 council meeting, but their new terms did not begin until Jan. 1.
Jones County started January 2013 with two elected officials, District Two Commissioner Jonathan Pitts and District Four Daylon Martin. The commissioners have both impacted the county government over the year with new energy and new ideas, some of which created controversy.
January was the month information was released about big changes in the way taxes are charged on vehicles in the state. Beginning in March, the personal property tax is charged when a vehicle is purchased, whether it is new or resold. It makes no difference if the vehicle is bought through a dealer or private individual.
