The responsibility of keeping the public safe from dangerous dogs was made clear by the Jones County Sheriff’s Department last week with the arrest of the owners of two dogs who attacked and seriously injured a man walking in his neighborhood.

Virginia Harbin, 40, has ownership of both of the pit bull mixed-breed dogs who attacked 70-year-old William Mote Jan. 3 as he was walking on Greenwood Road.

Harbin told Deputy Carl Wade Jr. during an interview at the Jones County Sheriff’s Department Jan. 5 that she owned one of the dogs alone and shared ownership of the other dog with 37-year-old Derrick Coney.

She said she kept the dogs at the used car lot where she is employed because she had nowhere else to keep them.

A warrant was issued for Harbin and Coney Jan. 8 on misdemeanor charges of reckless conduct, causing harm to or endangering the safety of another, and violation of the county’s leash ordinance. Both turned themselves in on the same day and were released on bonds of $1,250 each.
