A reception was held in honor of the recipients Jan. 14, immediately before the Board of Education’s monthly meeting.
School Superintendent William Mathews Jr. presided over the event and announced the names of the honorees. The honorees were Vicki Cobb, Myrle Mathews, Mattie Middlebrooks, Cecil Patterson, and Mattie Pitts.
Those five individuals represent more than 200 years of service to the students of Jones County.
Cobb had a total of 45 years as an educator, with 34 of those years as a full-time employee of Jones County. She had five years in education in other counties and worked part time in Jones County after retiring, for six more years.
Mathews had a total of 42 years as an educator, with 36 of those as a full-time employee of Jones County. She had six years in education in other counties.
Middlebrooks had a total of 52 years as an educator, with 37 years as a full-time employee of Jones County and six years in other counties. After her retirement, Middlebrooks worked as a substitute teacher for 19 additional years.
