The development being discussed at the Jan. 21 meeting was a proposed 60-unit apartment complex for an area off Highway 18 East. The principals of Peachtree Housing Communities came to Jones County’s housing committee recently requesting a letter of the support for the application for tax credits to fund the project.
The property owners told council members that the same company had built apartments in other cities that later became Section Eight housing and that was their concern.
Gray Mayor Stephen Tingen said he has had several requests from developers over the past week asking for his support of their projects. He said, currently, the property is zoned for apartments, and there is little council can do to control what is constructed unless guidelines are put into place.
“At this time the city has nothing in place holding developers to the standards we want,” he said.
Council members talked about the possibility of placing a moratorium on permits for the construction of apartments for 60 days at the suggestion of Tingen to give them time to amend their ordinance and put some construction standards in place.
