Jones sweeps Mary Persons, splits with Dodge

The Jones County tennis team swept Mary Persons to open the season at home last Thursday, then split against Dodge County on the road Monday in a makeup of last Tuesday’s match, which was postponed by rain.

The Lady Hounds downed Mary Persons 5-0, and the Hounds won 3-2.

In singles, Jazmine Washington downed Abby Owen 6-4, 6-1, Makayla Schafer defeated Alexxis Williams 1-6, 7-6 (9-7 tiebreaker), default when Williams withdrew due to a blister during the third set, and Sarah Pounds topped Ellie Cottle 6-3, 6-1.

In doubles, Olivia Lane and McKenzie Barnes defeated Hollie Seitz and Kassidy Sikes 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, and Jessica Smith and Kaitlyn Holder were up 2-1 on Lizzy Pieretti and Caroline Pieretti when the Mary Persons team withdrew due to the weather conditions.

The Jones County boys also won all three singles matches, with Jacob Wills downing Justin McKinney 6-2, 6-1, Coleman Hice defeating Will Newton 6-1, 6-2, and Robby Lanterman making a great rally to edge Connor Johnson 3-6, 7-6 (8-6 tiebreaker), 7-5.
