The Jones County Sheriff’s Department released information Tuesday morning about the escape of an inmate who was being transported to Jackson State Prison.

Chief Deputy Barbara Burnette stated in a 10 a.m. press release, Feb. 11, that Michael Shane Upshaw Jr., a white male, 5 feet, 6 inches tall, weighing approximately 140 pounds, escaped from custody at Exit 201 off I-75 in Butts County.

Upshaw was being transported from the Jones County Jail to Jackson State Prison.  Burnette said the escapee may have taken off his orange inmate jumpsuit and may be wearing a gray sweatshirt and gray sweatpants that have been cut off into shorts.

She said Upshaw’s original charge was burglary, and the chief requested anyone coming in contact with the inmate to please notify the Jones County Sheriff’s Office at 478-986-3489 or the Butts County Sheriff’s Office, 770-775-8216.

Upshaw was brought to Jones County Superior Court Feb. 6 for a probation modification, during which the balance of his two Jones County cases were revoked in full to prison.

The end date of those sentences is Jan. 6, 2015.
