Captain of investigations Earl Humphries said James Parker of Stallings Road was arrested Feb. 11 and charged with murder. Humphries said the Jones County Sheriff’s Department received a 911 call at approximately 7 a.m. the day of the arrest from a neighbor of Parker’s reporting that there had been an incident at 410 Stallings Road NW.
The captain said, when deputies arrived at the scene, Parker was still there and looked like he had been in a fight. He directed the officers into the home where they found 61-year-old Alan Helmuth dead due to some sort of violence.
Humphries said he is 99 percent sure that the death was caused by a gunshot from a small caliber gun.
“Because of the other injuries to Mr. Helmuth, we are awaiting confirmation from the crime lab,” he said.
Humphries said from the condition of both men, his assessment of what happened was that they had a ‘real good fight’ and at some point Parker shot Helmuth.
