In a testament to not giving up, Jones County defensive end Doug Richardson signed a football scholarship with Northeast Mississippi Community College last Friday.

A gifted athlete as a youngster, Richardson, who also started at center on the basketball team this season, had not played varsity sports until his senior year due to academic troubles.

“I played part of my freshman year on the ninth-grade teams, but then I wasn’t eligible,” said Richardson, adding that it was difficult watching his friends play and not being able to join them.

“It was really hard to get my grades back up to where I could play. I give the credit to my coaches and teachers for not giving up on me and making me work, especially Ms. Ashley Jiles. They believed in me before I did.

“Now all their work and mine is paying off.”

Even getting back onto the field and court and playing well for the Greyhounds almost wasn’t enough, as Richardson faced one more heartbreak before signing last week.

“Doug was all set to sign with West Georgia Technical College on national signing day a couple of weeks ago, but the night before the coach called to tell me he had just found out the program was being dropped,” Jones County coach Dwight Jones said. “That was such a disappointment because Doug had worked so hard to get back on the field and had been a real good player and leader for us this season.”
