Registering to vote got easier last week for anyone with a Georgia driver’s license and access to the Internet.

Online voter registration was announced by Secretary of State Brian Kemp in a press release March 31 and is now available on the website, sos.ga.gov.

The deadline to register to vote in the upcoming May 20 election is April 21, which gives unregistered voters about 10 days to sign up. Early voting for the election will begin at the Jones County Government Center April 28.

Jones County Elections Superintendent Marion Hatton said she saw a demonstration of the online registration during the most recent elections conference.

“My hope is that this technology will encourage our youngest generation of possible voters to take that first step by getting registered using an easy method they feel comfortable with.  This age group is very tech savvy, and we want them to take advantage of that,” Hatton said.

She said, at the county end, the process of registering online applicants would be almost identical to the Department of Driver Services applications that Georgia counties have been working with since 1995.
