The Jones County News won seven awards in the 2014 Georgia Press Association’s Better Newspaper Contest, including a third-place finish in General Excellence.

The first top award was in Local News Coverage and included high praise from the judge, who is a member of the Virginia Press Association.

“This paper clearly is in touch with its community,” the judge said. “Quality and use of photos sets this paper apart, along with a nice mix of news and features. Clean, clear writing in general.

The news also placed first in Religion Coverage.

“Three strong stories about diverse aspects of faith – lived at home, abroad and even ‘performed’ – provided more than just event coverage,” the judge said. “Stories revealed motivation, sincerity and even the impact of the subject matter. Photographs accented but did not overpower written content. Well done!”

In addition to being awarded for writing, the News also earned a first-place finish for layout and design.
