Two Jones Countians and another man from Bibb County were recently arrested for helping themselves to scrap metal from a vacant lot.

Sheriff’s Department Investigator Kenny Gleaton said Gary Johnson III, 17, Isaac Carl Grinell, 18, and Victor Leon Jackson, 24, were arrested June 6 and arrested for theft by taking. Johnson and Jackson are from Jones County and Grinell from Bibb.

Two juveniles who accompanied the men were also taken into custody.

Gleaton said the Sheriff’s Department received a call about the suspects who were seen at the property on Pecan Drive. He said he and investigator Kenny Allen went to the area, parked near the scene, and observed five males carrying various car parts and other pieces of metal.

“We took pictures of them as they were loading up the truck. When they pulled out, we performed a traffic stop. They admitted taking the metal, and they were all charged with theft by taking,” he said.

The investigator said the charges are misdemeanor offenses.

“It’s not often you find a crime in progress and can take pictures,” he commented.
