Highway 49 claimed another victim when a head-on collision took the life of a Macon man last week.

Jones County Sheriff’s Department fatality investigator Kenny Allen said 65-year-old Ernest Jones was pronounced dead at the scene of a July 1 accident. He said the accident was reported to the sheriff’s department at 11:19 p.m. and took place approximately two-tenths of a mile south of Morris Stevens Road.

Allen said two vehicles were involved in the fatal crash, and both of the cars were Honda Accords. He said a 2008 Honda, driven by 20-year-old Tanner Talley of Warner Robins, was traveling north toward Milledgeville and the 1991 Honda driven by Jones was headed to Macon.

“The 2008 Honda crossed the middle line and struck the 1991 Honda,” the investigator said.

He said the 2008 Honda actually caught fire, and a passer-by pulled Talley out of the car. The driver was transported to the Medical Center by ambulance and is currently in stable condition.
