Jones County Fire Chief Don Graham said the July 11 fire was reported shortly after 2 p.m. Firefighters responded to the call at 135 Ridgecrest Place to find a large single story brick dwelling with heavy fire coming out of the roof.
The chief said neither homeowners Pete and Beth Coon, nor their children, were at home when the fire broke out. He said a neighbor saw the smoke coming from the house and called 911 to alert the fire department.
Graham said the first engine company arrived at the scene within two minutes of being dispatched and found the blaze had consumed the entire attic area and kitchen.
Jones County and the City of Gray volunteer firefighters battled the blaze together.
Neighbor Alan Childs said he saw the daughter’s car at the house, and he and a friend attempted to get inside to get her out. Before he could get through the door, he was informed she was gone with her parents.
