The Greyhounds began their final week of voluntary summer workouts on Monday with morning weight lifting and then skills practice in helmets and shorts on the practice field.

New coach Justin Rogers said the players continue to make progress but that there is still much work to be done before the season opens at Morgan County on Aug. 29.

“We’ve come a long way since June, but we still have a long way to go,” he said. “If we could just stop all these injuries we’ve been having, it would be great. I’ve never seen anything like this, and we’re not even in pads yet. Maybe when we get all the gear on the injuries will stop.”

The Greyhounds are scheduled to compete in a team camp at Upson-Lee High in Thomaston on Thursday. Official mandatory preseason practice then opens on Friday morning before shifting to afternoons next week.

“The official start of practice really doesn’t affect us much,” Rogers said. “We’ll still be doing the same things we’ve been doing in the voluntary workouts until we’re allowed to begin working in pads.”

The first day for that will be Friday, Aug. 1. Rogers said the Greyhounds will have three days of football camp at the school starting on Aug. 1, with the players camping in the gym, then shift to a regular practice schedule on Aug. 4. Students start back to school on Aug. 5.
