A group of Jones County patriots got together last week to work on the plan for the county’s 13th annual Veterans Appreciation Day.

The date for the 2014 event is Nov. 8. The theme of the event is ‘Heroes Who Walk Among Us’ to pay tribute to all the Jones County men and women who took the oath to protect and defend the United States of America.

The July 24 meeting was led by chairman Richard Combs and started with a discussion of the grant application for Tri-County’s Operation RoundUp to help fund the event.

Committee member Joy Carr brought up the idea of a flag drop box. She said Frank Duke saw a flag drop box in another county and thought it was a good idea. The drop box was actually an old mailbox that was painted red, white, and blue and placed in a convenient location.

Duke checked with the post office and was told all it would take is a letter from the Veteran’s Committee stating the use for the mailbox to get one donated.
