Bryant was sentenced March 28, 2008, for the murder of Joshua Oshea Smith that took place Jan. 3, 2007. He began serving his sentence April 17, 2008, according to the Georgia Department of Corrections website.
The defendant was represented in his July 24 new trial motion by attorney Kelly L. McLain and public defender G.B. Moore III. His defense counsel in 2008 was public defender Sean Dolan, who testified via Skype, a first for Jones County.
Superior Court Judge Hulane George presided over Bryant’s 2008 trial and last week’s motion. She noted her surprise at how well the Skype testimony worked. McLain’s computer was connected to a multimedia electronic system used in Jones County’s courtroom known as ELMO. The system operates as an overhead projector and has the capability of displaying DVD files and PowerPoint presentations on a large screen in the courtroom.
