Was it rape? A Jones County Jury heard testimony on that question for four days in the trial of Michael Lynn Turner.

Turner, 42, was arrested June 19, 2008, and charged with the rape of a 16-year-old girl who was spending the night with his daughter and with possession of marijuana. He has been held without bond since his arrest.

The trial started last Wednesday, June 24, and, after a weekend off, began again Monday morning. The jury deliberated for a little over an hour before bringing back their verdict of guilty.

Chief Superior Court Judge William Prior Jr. sentenced Turner to 30 years to life. Following the sentencing, the judge stated that Turner will serve the 30 years before being eligible for parole.

Assistant District Attorney Gregory Bushway spoke to the victim’s family after receiving the verdict and the sentencing.

“He won’t be able to do this to anyone else,” Bushway said. “That’s what we are working for along with justice for the victim.”
