Three adults arrested for a drive-by shooting in Gray were granted bond in Jones County Superior Court last week.
Jerell Holland, Deontae Williams, and Daniel Butler were each granted a $50,000 bond July 2 by Superior Court Judge James Cline, albeit with several stipulations.
Holland, 17, was arrested June 15 and charged with aggravated assault, criminal damage to property, and weapons in a school safety zone. Williams, 17, was also arrested June 15 and charged with carrying a deadly weapon to or at public gatherings, criminal damage to property in first degree, and aggravated assault. Butler, 17, was arrested June 16 and is charged with aggravated assault, criminal damage to property in the first degree, carrying deadly weapons in a school safety zone, with all charges as a party to a crime.
In addition to the usual bond restrictions of good behavior, no alcohol or drugs, and showing up for court, the defendants were also ordered to remain enrolled in the Bibb County School System and to have no contact with the victim of the drive-by shooting.
The shooting that resulted in the charges took place June 8 on Maggie Califf Street near the Ninth Grade Academy. In addition to the adults, several juveniles have been charged in the crime.
Gray Police were alerted about the crime when a mother with two children in her vehicle reported that her 2001 Explorer had been shot while she was traveling on Maggie Califf headed toward Highview Street. Her young son was strapped into the back seat on the passenger side near where the bullets hit the outside of the car, and her daughter was in the front passenger seat.
An investigation of the incident began immediately and a tip assisted with the identification of those involved. Gray Police Chief Adam Lowe said juveniles from Gray had been arguing with juveniles from Northeast High School in Macon, and the argument escalated to the shooting.
Gray Police Lt. Eric Maynard said Octavious Jackson, 17, arrested June 17 and charged with conspiracy to commit a crime, was previously granted a $5,000 property bond.
Two other adults charged in the shooting — Vindarious Glover, 22, arrested June 18 and charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor, carrying deadly weapons to or at public gatherings, and criminal damage to property in the first degree, and Demarco Deon Woodford, 21, arrested June 19 and charged with aggravated assault, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, criminal damage to property in first degree, and carrying a deadly weapon to or at a public gathering in a school zone — have requested bonds but to date have been denied.
Lowe said, in addition to the bullets that hit the car, three bullets hit a house on Maggie Califf Street. The shooting is thought to be the result of continuing issues between the two groups that were going on during the past school year.
