Two former Jones County basketball stars have received post-season honors for their play with their college teams this season.

Brandi Jones was named to the Atlantic Sun Conference all-freshman team, and Chimere Jordan was named to the All-Peach Belt Conference second team and to the all-tournament team.

Jones’ initial college season came to a close last Thursday when her Kennesaw State Lady Owls lost to Belmont 70-65 in the opening round of the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament hosted by Mercer in Macon.

But it was a good week anyway for the former Lady ’Hound. She found out just before the tournament that she had been named to the Atlantic Sun’s all-freshman team, and she was able to make a quick visit home when Kennesaw State practiced at Jones County High School on Wednesday.

Her former teammates and coach, Kurt Greene, were able to watch Jones practice with her new team.

“It was good to have her back here, even if for only one afternoon,” Greene said. “She’s had a great freshman season, and she will only get better as she gains experience. She should be a super player for them by the time she’s a junior and senior.”

Despite playing with a heavily-wrapped left shoulder after separating it the week before, Jones scored 10 points off the bench in Thursday’s game and hit a 3-pointer to give her team the lead in the second half.

Jones was the only freshman in the conference to earn A-Sun player of the week honors, with the award coming after Jones led the Lady Owls in scoring in consecutive one-point wins over Mercer and USC Upstate earlier in the season. Jones finished the season ranked 29th in scoring in A-Sun games at 9.1 points per contest. She connected 23 times from beyond the arc in A-Sun games, good for second among all freshmen. She set her season-high in scoring with 19 in Kennesaw’s one-point win at home against the Spartans.

Teammate Sametrai Gideon also made the all-freshman team.

“This award is befitting to our excellent freshman players on our team,” said Kennesaw coach Colby Tilley. “For them to receive this award from the coaches and sports information directors of this conference shows the respect that they’ve gained as freshmen and is a true bright spot for the future of our program.

“We felt like when Sametrai and Brandi signed to play for us, they would be two important pieces of the puzzle to take our team to the next level. They certainly haven’t disappointed us,” Tilley said.

Jordan, meanwhile, averaged 19.5 points over two games in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament for Georgia College & State University to be selected to the all-tournament team.

The junior guard scored 22 points with eight rebounds and a pair of assists in the quarterfinal round to power the Bobcats past Georgia Southwestern State University 60-59. Jordan added 17 points and three rebounds in Saturday’s semifinal loss to No. 17 Francis Marion University.

She is the first all-tournament team selection for the Bobcat women’s basketball team since Marquita Driskell in 2007, and the 15th in the program’s history.

For the season, Jordan averaged 16.1 points a game for the 21-8 Bobcats to earn second team all-conference honors.
