The awareness tree this month is about literacy National Read Across America Month and celebrating Dr. Seuss’s birthday. Dr. Seuss was an American children’s author, political cartoonist, illustrator, poet animator, screenwriter, and filmmaker. Read Across America was created by the National Education Association that began in 1997; an observance in the United States held on the school day closest to March 2, the birthday of Dr. Seuss. Reading is the gateway to knowledge, wisdom and understanding. Reading is considered fundamental to the ability to function in society. Literacy builds self-esteem and promotes the overall quality of life. The Awareness Tree is located in the lobby of the Jones County Government Center.
