Trey Bonner's hopes of winning a state title in wrestling were dashed Thursday afternoon when he lost his quarterfinal match in a disqualification.
After a scoreless first period in his 285-pound Class 5A bout with Trevor Smith of Locust Grove at the Macon Centreplex, Bonner scored the first point when he escaped from the down position to start the second period.
But then the match got away from the Jones County senior. He was penalized one point for accidentally striking Smith in the head reaching for a hold, and three more points for stalling, giving Smith a 4-1 lead going into the final period.
Trying to battle back, Bonner was disqualified when he grabbed the back of Smith's head gear trying to pull him down.
Bonner, who was the state runner-up last year, can now finish no higher than third through the consolation bracket.
He won his first consolation bout Thursday night with a pin against Tyrome Lewis of Stockbridge.
Bonner must win two more consolation bouts Friday and another on Saturday to place third in the division. He faces Gabe Jones of Starr's Mill at 3 p.m. Friday in his next match.
