Kerwin “Buck” Harris has been hired to replace Dennis Woolfolk as head boys’ basketball coach at Jones County High School.
Woolfolk stepped down after eight years as coach at his alma mater to focus on his duties as an assistant principal at the high school.
Harris, who is married to Jones County head girls’ basketball coach ChoRhonda Gwaltney-Harris, will assume his new duties next school year. He comes to Gray after four years as coach at Baldwin High School in Milledgeville, where he compiled a 68-42 record and coached the Braves to the Class 4A final four in 2018.
Before that, Harris was 55-7 in two years as head coach at Laney High in Augusta, leading the Wildcats to the Class 2A final four twice.
An Augusta native, Harris played at Augusta State and later served as an assistant coach at Augusta State and Campbell before moving to the high school ranks.
Woolfolk had a 120-99 record and led the Greyhounds to the Class 5-A state playoffs four of his eight seasons as coach.
The changes were approved by the Jones County Board of Education at its monthly meeting Tuesday night. Read more about the moves in this week’s and next week’s editions of the paper.
