The Jones County boys’ season came to a heartbreaking end with a 57-56 loss at Wayne County in the opening round of the state basketball playoffs Thursday night in Jesup.
The Greyhounds fought back from a 12-point deficit in the final 2:47 and took a 56-55 lead on a layup by Joe Jackson with 22 seconds to play.
Wayne County countered with a quick jumper from just inside the 3-point line at the top of the key by B.J. Wright to put the Yellow Jackets back ahead.
But there was a malfunction with the clock after Johnson’s basket, with it stuck on 21.2 seconds as Wayne County scored and Jones County got back to mid court. Play was finally halted and after a lengthy discussion, 7.5 seconds were put on the clock.
The Hounds inbounded the ball and Bryson Wooten, who was tightly covered, got off a 3-point try that missed.
