MACON: Mrs. JoAnn Smith, age 73, of Macon, died Thursday, Jan. 30, at her home after an extended illness. She was born in Washington on March 9, 1946. As a child, she moved with her family to Collins where she was raised along with her siblings until her marriage. She was a devoted mother, wife, and sister. She raised four children in Toombs County before relocating to Macon.
Mrs. Smith was baptized on Sept. 16, 1967 as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses. She faithfully devoted over 50 years to sharing Bible teachings with those in her community. She was a member of the local Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses on Joycliff Road. Mrs. Smith was self-employed, cleaning houses for many years until she fell ill. She enjoyed spending time outdoors, growing flowers, and going to the beach.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Tommy Arthur Smith; her parents, William Arthur and Minnie Brown Smith; three sisters, Myrtice Turner, Naomi Phillips, and Florence Pitts; five brothers, Wilbur Smith, Felix Smith, Pat Smith, Henry Smith, and Venson Smith.
Mrs. Smith is survived by four children; Tracy and Jim Higgins of Gray, Keith Smith of Macon, LaVaughn Smith of Atlanta, and Wendy and Dave Hall of Charlotte, NC; four grandchildren, Brandon, Neal, Jordan, and Chase; and two great-grandchildren, Aubree and Holden; two sisters, Imogene Kersey of Flatwoods, Kentucky and Isabel Harden of Lyons; and one brother, Frank Smith of Statesboro.
A memorial service will be held at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 3321 Joycliff Road, Macon, Georgia 31211, Saturday, Feb. 8 at 4:00 p.m. with a drop-in visitation from 3:00-4:00 p.m.
