The Jones County Lady Hounds held off a late Bainbridge charge to down the Lady Bearcats 47-36 Friday night in the opening round of the GHSA Class 5A state playoffs in Gray.
Jones County will play the winner between Griffin and South Effingham in the second round either next Wednesday or Thursday – in Griffin if the Bears win or in Gray if South Effingham upsets Griffin.
In the state playoffs for the first time since 2009, the Lady Hounds had some jitters to begin Friday’s game. Turnovers, missed shots and trouble working the ball inside against Bainbridge’s big lineup kept the score close through most of the first half.
Jones County opened up a five-point lead late in the second quarter and stayed comfortably ahead in the third quarter.
But the Lady Cats, boosted by a couple of 3-pointers by Zycheria Russ, cut the lead to 34-33 early in the fourth quarter.
But then senior Jasmine Greene took over, sinking three baseline 3-pointers down the stretch, and a pair of free throws, to help the Lady Hounds pull away for the 11-point victory.
Greene led the Lady Hounds with 17 points, and fellow senior Ty Richardson added 15. Russ led the Lady Cats with 14.
Jones County improved to 23-6. Bainbridge ends the season with a 14-15 record.
