JONES COUNTY: Newman Lamar Moore passed away Tuesday, Dec. 18, at the age of 93. Visitation was held from 11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 26, at Gray Memorial Chapel in Gray. Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m. in the chapel of Georgia Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery in Milledgeville. Pastor Stephen Newman officiated.

Mr. Moore was born on April 23, 1925, in Comer and was the son of the late Hawkins William Moore and Gladys Dillard Moore. He was a graduate of Comer High School, West Georgia College, and The University of Georgia. He honorably served in the U.S. Navy submarine service during World War II in the Pacific and always said the best education he received was his three years spent in the Navy. He was a Mason, York Rite and 1970 Potentate of Al Sihah Shrine in Macon. He refereed basketball for 28 years and retired from Robins Air Force Base in 1982 after 30 years of service working in Material Management. He golfed into his mid-80’s and taught his grandsons the game.

His grandchildren were the joy of his life. He enjoyed landscaping his yard and growing flowers. He was a member of Elam Baptist Church in Gray and was preceded in death by siblings Dorothea Holcomb, Milton Moore, and Frazier Moore.

Mr. Moore is survived by two daughters, Gail (Jim) Daugherty of Gray and Gwen (Danny) Hobbs of Evans; 14 grandchildren, Sarah (Stephen) Newman and Daniel Hobbs, Elizabeth (Wes) Whitehurst, Hannah (Chris) Brown, Rachel, Naomi (Dallas) Long, Ruth (Mark) Thompson, Lydia (Jonathan) Roberson, James, John, Joshua, Rebekah, Joanna, and Joseph; 11 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Hiram Moore.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to First Baptist of Gray, Great Commission Offering.
