Boys 8th, girls 9th in soggy state golf tournament

The Jones County boys placed eighth and the girls ninth in the GHSA Class 5A state golf tournaments held last week in Carrollton.

It is the first time the boys’ and girls’ teams both made state in the same year, coach Jeff Williams said.

“Having both teams finish in the top 10 is something that has never happened before,” he said. “We had hoped to do a little better, but the conditions were not good at best with rain both days. The ground was more than saturated for the second round on Tuesday.”

It is the first year the state tournaments have been two rounds.

The Greyhounds shot a 662, with rounds of 331 both days at Sunset Hills Country Club.

“The boys played about as well as we expected,” said Williams, who accompanied the boys’ team. “We were consistent both days, and having Nic Johnson, who is a freshman, lead us is promising for the future.”
