BREAKING: Two drivers die in wreck on bypass

An Eatonton man driving a flatbed truck pulled out onto the Gray Bypass from U.S. Highway 129 heading south in front of a log truck driven by a Monroe County resident Thursday morning.

Both drivers died as a result.

According to Maj. Earl Humphries of the Jones County Sheriff's Office, a witness behind the stopped flatbed truck said it appeared the driver thought the log truck would stop. The bigger truck had the right of way, however, and had no reason to stop.

Concerns were raised early about the intersection, starting with the bypass construction manager. The Georgia Department of Transportation was going to study the traffic flow due to concerns raised by local elected officials, including County Commission Chairman Chris Weidner and Commissioner Tommy Robinson. So far, two signs reading "cross traffic does not stop" have been the only visible changes to the intersection.

Cleanup was still underway at 3 p.m., and the names of the drivers have not yet been released.

There were no passengers in either truck.
