Commissioners fund recreation at Mattie Wells

Jones County Commissioners honored the Jones County Pups Youth Track and Field Team with a proclamation recognizing the team’s accomplishments.

The proclamation was at the top of agenda items for the June 20 meeting and it was read by Commissioner Daylon Martin, who was also one of the coaches for the team.

The track team brought back five state championships from the state competition held May 5 and 6. Laney Doster won the javelin throw, Erin Blount won the 400-meter run, Robert Rodehearver won the 800-meter run, and Mya Anderson won the 200-meter dash.

The team of Austin Martin, Blount, Kendrick Wooten and Rodeheaver won the 4-by-400-meter relay.

The meeting was called to order by Board Chairman Chris Weidner, and the first new business item was the budget for the Jones County Public Defenders Office. Chief Public Defender Green Berry Moore made his case for a $7,000 increase in next year’s budget because of an increase by the state for state-paid public defenders.
