Dental student discovers apparent human jawbone

Investigators with the Jones County Sheriff’s Department are attempting to identify a bone discovered by a fisherman near a private pond.

Investigator Kenny Gleaton said officers responded to a call at the 2900 block of New Clinton Road near Dusty Lane, Saturday, March 17, concerning the bone that is believed to be of human origin.

Gleaton said a young man was fishing, and while he was walking around the pond, saw what looked like a bone partially sticking out of the ground. He said the fisherman is a dental student in Augusta, and he thought he saw teeth.

The investigator said the young man uncovered the bone enough to identify it as a jawbone and called the sheriff’s office. The dental student said it appeared to be human.
