DFE students ‘egg-cited’ about chickens

Chickens are the focus for second graders at Dames Ferry Elementary School, and now the construction class from Jones County High School is lending a hand. 

Each grade level at the elementary school has a yearlong STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) project, and the chicken coop is the project for the second grade. The project for kindergartners is hydroponics. First-graders have a butterfly garden; third-graders an outdoor classroom; fourth-graders bees; and the project for fifth-graders is erosion.

DFE second grade teacher Deborah Cox explained that, two years ago, second-grade teachers decided to provide a new experience for their students. Instead of simply reading about the life cycles of chickens, they wanted the students to have hands-on experience.

“With the help of our community, we now have seven hens in our chicken coop, and one bunny,” she said.
