She was born in Carrollton Ky., to the late James T. and Lola Mae Ray on Aug. 28, 1923. She married Elwyn Barnette “Barney” Fothergill Nov. 8, 1945, after he returned as a decorated veteran in World War II. They were married 61 years until his passing Aug. 21, 2007.

During World War II, Alene was a true “Rosie the Riveter,” working in a factory in Cincinnati, Ohio, to make airplane parts to assist with the war effort. She moved to Louisville, Kentucky, when she married Barney, where they raised their two children. She helped support her family by working at Famco Inc. in Louisville. They moved to Arcadia, Florida, when Barney retired from Naval Ordnance Station in Louisville in 1990.

Alene is survived by her two children, Steven Ray (Karen) Fothergill of Florence, Kentucky, and Deborah Lurie Smith of Gray; five grandchildren, Steven C. (Amy) Smith of Houston, Randall B. (Jenna) Fothergill of Rockledge, Florida, Anthony R. Fothergill of Dubose, Wyoming, Mindy (J.P.) Aguon of Guam, and Joshua W. (Natalie) Lurie of Gray; eight great-grandchildren; son-in-law Francis E. Smith, of Rockport, Missouri, and her long-time care giver, Glenda Wright.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to the Children’s Miracle Network, childrensmiraclenetworkhospitals.org.

The family also extends its appreciation to the caring staff and administration of Gray Health and Rehabilitation Center, where she resided for more than two years.

Hart’s Mortuary of Gray has charge of arrangements.
