Free book day successful

I know a lot of people absolutely hate Facebook — and many times I hate it also.

But I love Facebook when something comes up last minute like this past week.  The last day of the bookstore being open for business was Thursday, Dec. 31.  It was a great day with Gray, Jones County, and surrounding counties all coming out to buy books.

On New Year’s Day, my family and I worked all day on the bookstore.  Over 500 shelves had to be taken apart — the shelves on the main floor were all raw lumber (thanks to Sam for putting them together and delivering them way back when) that my son had put nice ends on.

Of course, that meant all the books remaining on the shelves after Thursday’s last day had to be taken off, packed, etc.

As we were taking books off the shelves, I started to think about the best use for them.  I came up with the idea to have a friends and customer free day on Sunday, Jan. 3.  It was announced on the bookstore Facebook page New Year’s Day night.  Less than 24 hours later, over 1,500 people had seen or shared the notice and were sharing with others.

Had an awesome turnout for “free day” on Sunday.  Thousands of books left the building — it lasted from 1:00 to 5:00 and was full of happy people taking bags and bags to their cars.  Thanks to everyone who shared it on Facebook and I’m glad I could give some of the happiness back to you that you’ve given me the last 10 years.

I’ll have one more free day this coming Saturday, Jan. 9, from 1:00 to 5:00.  Come on in, bring your own bags, and let’s finish this off right!  I’ll be going through lots of boxes of books that were in my side room yesterday, so even if you attended this past Sunday, there’ll be new and different books for you to look at.

Build your stack for all the year!  Thanks again and see you Saturday.
