Greyhounds wallop Waco 48-19

The Greyhounds continued to produce quick scores with big plays as they whipped Washington County 48-19 in their home opener last Friday night to improve to 2-0 on the season.

And this time the defense got in on the scoring, with junior safety Jake Lanford securing two touchdowns – the first on a 46-yard fumble return in the first quarter and the second on a 100-yard interception return in the third period.

Jones County’s senior backfield duo of quarterback Teldrick Ross and running back Drake Bolus also had another big night.

Ross ran for two touchdowns, 25 and 76 yards, and passed for another, 17 yards to Dayton Hunt Jr. He finished with 115 yards on five carries, completed four passes for 83 yards and also ran for a two-point conversion.

Bolus rushed for 185 yards on 12 carries, including touchdown runs of 63 and 65 yards, and he caught two passes for 55 yards. He just missed on adding two more touchdowns, fumbling at the goal line as he stretched for a touchdown in the first quarter and having an apparent 77-yard touchdown jaunt on a screen pass whittled down to a 24-yard gain due to an illegal block in the second quarter.

“Yeah, we could have really buried them if we’d scored on those two plays,” Jones County coach Justin Rogers said. “But it’s hard to complain about the way we played on offense and defense. When you score on explosive plays like that, it not only gives you points but a lot of momentum and takes it away from the other team. And getting the defense in on it with Jake’s two plays just adds to that. It was a really good win for us.”
