Jones County girls to host Woodland Monday to open region playoffs

The Lady Hounds won all four region games this week, including an exciting 10-9 victory in 11 innings at Hampton on Wednesday, to finish the regular season 20-6 overall and 12-4 in 4-5A, claiming home-field advantage for the opening round of the region playoffs.

Jones County will host Woodland-Stockbridge (7-10, 6-8) in a doubleheader Monday at 4:30 p.m. The third game in the best-of-three series, if needed, will also be in Gray at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.

The other first-round matchups are Eagle’s Landing at Locust Grove, Stockbridge at Ola, and Hampton at Union Grove.

The four first-round winners all qualify for the state playoffs. They will continue play for the region crown in a double-elimination tournament Wednesday and Thursday at Locust Grove, the regular season champ.

After a slow start this season, the Lady Hounds finished strong, winning 13 of their final 15 games, including nine in a row in the region.

That put them back in the state softball rankings for Class 5A at No. 10 in the Score Atlanta poll. Locust Grove is No. 6.

“We’ve been on a good run, but now it is the playoffs and the season starts over,” coach Blake Lyons said. “We’re glad to be playing at home in the first round, and Woodland will be a good test. You can’t just show up to win. Woodland has played well, and we’ll have to play well to win, which should help us as we move forward.”

The Lady Hounds trounced Stockbridge 12-0 at home on Tuesday and finished the regular season by sweeping Dutchtown 20-2 and 11-1 at home on Thursday.

The week’s big game was at Hampton. The Lady Hounds led early, fell behind and had to score a run in the top of the seventh to force extra innings. Neither team scored in the eighth or ninth. Tie-breaker rules began in the 10th, with the team at bat beginning with a runner on second. Both scored a run in the 10th, and Jones County scored three in the top of the 11th and survived a two-run error in the bottom of the 11th to win.

Mayson Watford held Hampton to one hit over the final 3 1/3 innings to get the win in relief.

She was also the winner in the first game against Dutchtown. Savannah Williams got the victories over Stockbridge and the second game against Dutchtown.

Shelby Fontenot went 2-for-2 with two RBIs against Stockbridge.

Brenay Howard, Watford, Madison Bennett and Sydney Lanford all had three hits each against Hampton. Fontenot went 3-for-4 with five RBIs in the first game against Dutchtown, and Watford, Bennett and Kaylin Curry had two hits each in the second game.
